How to Cope with Social Distancing during COVID-19?
Social distancing is a public health safety measure used to reduce the chance of spreading a communicable disease such as the Coronavirus. It involves spacing people physically from each other. We should be reminded that it is not about stopping social connections. Therefore, it should really be called “physical distancing”. This is about minimizing exposure to people who are infected.
It is important to:
1. Keep at least a distance of two arms (approximately) 2 meters from others in the public
2. Avoid crowded places and gatherings
3. Avoid common greetings such as handshakes and hugs
4. Avoid physical contact with individuals outside your living environment
5. Stay at home as much as possible
6. Greet with a wave instead of a handshake, kiss or hug
7. Host virtual playdates
8. Use technology to keep in touch with friends and family
Physical distancing can affect different people in different ways. Some kids may enjoy a slower pace and extra time at home. Some kids may start to experience stress, fear, anxiety, loneliness and depression. It is normal to feel all of these at some time during Covid-19. Please understand that you are not alone. Many kids and adults are going through these emotions.
There are many ways to deal with social distancing:
1. Host a virtual gathering with your friends of family via video chat, telephone, or a group call.
2. Spend time with your immediate family
3. Keep up with your school work and use internet learning resources
4. Set a fun activity with your family for each night of the week (movie night, pizza night, board game night)
5. Try some new hobbies at home
6. Catch up on your sleep, rest and relaxation and learn yoga
7. Read some new books
8. Play with lego
9. Practice some creative writing and make a journal
10. Bake some tasty treats
11. Clean your room and your parents’ room (they will be so happy)
12. Color or finish puzzles and crosswords
